Annatto Powder (Edible)

A wonderful bright orange edible powder that can be used for natural food colouring or to add a subtle flavour.

Annatto powder is made from the seed or of the achiote tree, which is indigenous to Central and South America, Mexico, and the Caribbean.

Savoury cooking ideas – Add annatto powder to the seasoned flour mixture you use for coating chicken, beef or pork chops before frying. Combine annatto powder with your corn flour mix for orange-coloured, annatto-flavoured tortillas and tamales. Also wonderful for colouring rice. Annatto seeds pair well with spices like cumin, garlic and chili peppers.

Sweet cooking ideas – We have added this powder to sponge cakes and it results in a wonderful bright orange sponge that has a slight nutty flavour. Also wonderful in butter or royal icing. Also suitable for sauces and custards.

Craft – The seeds and pulp have been used for hundreds of years for a variety of purposes and are used heavily in Latin America as a dye and an ingredient in many foods. Suitable to be used as a fabric dye if a fixer is used. Can also be use as an ink, used with a brush.

Packed in airtight, light resistant, re-sealable & recyclable bags that allow some of the powder to be used while the remainder can be stored in a cool place for future use.

The bags are carefully wrapped in tissue paper and placed in a cardboard postage box making this an ideal gift.
