Edible Butterfly Blue Pea Flower Powder

This fascinating powder is such fun to work with, when used in baking it turns your cake mixture blue! There are no chemicals or preservatives, it is simply powdered butterfly blue pea flower.

This is an edible powder suitable for many culinary uses. Please be aware that the colour from this powder moisture activated. Here are a few ideas.

Sweet Dishes – We have has such fun experimenting with this powder in cakes and icing (see pictures) When mixing in cakes add to the eggs to activate the colour. When using in butter icing make a paste with water before adding to the butter. The hotter the water the more intense the colour, but allow to cool before adding to the butter icing. If you add lemon juice to icing the mixture will turn from blue to purple.

Savoury Dishes – This is great to colour rice, bread, pancakes, eggs. If using pickled eggs they will turn purple as the vinegar is acidic, try adding a couple of teaspoons of the powder to the jar of pickled onions or eggs and leave over night to turn purple, it makes wonderful colourful salads.

Warm Drinks – The children love it when used in warm milk at bedtime. This makes a lovely tea as well.

Cold Drinks – Will turn any drink blue and turn to purple if there is any lemon added. It makes a great party trick.

Craft – Can be used to make a natural fabric dye or used to create ink for art work.

Beauty – We here at Polly’s Petals love putting this in the bath as the colour is such a wonderful blue. Thankfully it wont turn you in to a smurf or turn the bath blue either.
